Chipotle

I’m aware that you can get “nachos” on the Chipotle “secret menu”. What that means is that they’ll put your burrito bowl on top of a bed of chips, but lack the ability to melt the cheese.

I’ll try that next time, but for lunch this week, I just went with some tacos.

I’ve always been a fan of fast casual Mexican, going back to Baja Fresh on the Rockville Pike, 20 years ago. For a time I was a member of the Chipotle Farm Team, a non defunct, invitation-only loyalty program.

Recent negative press aside, I still like Chipotle. These are grilled chicken tacos with rice, pinto beans, pico de gallo, salsa verde, corn salsa, and cheese. I like all the salsas, but too many of them will soggify your dish. A taco shell can only withstand so much.

Anyways, these were pretty good.

Masala Kitchen – No Nacho Content

So, while the nacho to-do list remains long, the fact is that Nachojawn really doesn’t discriminate in my dining selections. I’m sure faithful readers have noticed a small shift towards other cuisines this year, and I want to reassure everyone that this will remain a nacho-centric blog. However, I do want to be able to share my thoughts on other dining options in Philadelphia.

One new option, replacing Marabella Meatball on Walnut, between 12th and 13th streets, is Masala Kitchen.

I ordered the Masala and Kheema rolls, and was encouraged to try both the hot sauce and “white sauce”.

They’re a decent size, but you’d definitely need two of them to fill up at lunch (at least with Nachojawn sized appetites). The hot sauce was indeed hot, the white sauce white, and mixing them together was delicious.

Thumbs up for this fast casual Indian option. Service was friendly, and I’ll see what I can do about getting some chicken tikka nachos on the menu.

They don’t all look like nachos to me, but what do I know?

Phoenix Breakfast Nachos

The Nachojawn family usually makes a trip out west in the spring, but didn’t make it this year. Next year though, I might have to look these up.

The breakfast nachos at Daily Dose, a breakfast and lunch spot with locations in Scottsdale and Phoenix.

The Phoenix New Times has the scoop:

The dish begins with a heap of thin, nearly translucent tortilla chips, glued together by a sticky nucleus of cheese, then topped with chorizo, scrambled eggs, tomatillo salsa, a red chili sauce, pico de gallo, and jalapeños. The oversize nacho platter, which can easily feed two, is shellacked with a gravy-like blend of mozzarella and cheddar-jack cheese and delivered with a side ramekin of sausage gravy.

Los Camaradas

It’s almost unconscionable that while Nachojawn headquarters is located only a few blocks away from the Philadelphia Magazine 2015 Nachos of the Year – until a few nights ago I had never been to Los Camaradas.
Los Camaradas replaced the questionably named steakhouse The Strip Joint, which SoWe before that, and Divan Turkish Kitchen back when Graduate Hospital was an “up and coming” neighborhood.

Hopefully the restaurant turnstile is over at this spot, and my early impressions were positive.

First, let me give a shout out to Nachojawn Jr. and the rest of the 2015-2016 Taney Demon Deacons.

Avenging their only loss on the season, the Deacons won a thriller 20-19 against the tenacious Wolfpack, coached by FON El Dentista Loco.

Nachojawn Jr led the way with eight 4th quarter points.

His reward was a medal and some carnitas tacos.

We were out with Los Entrenadores Campeones, so we doubled up on the nachos, getting both the short rib and chicken versions.

We had built up quite an appetite after the league finals and all-star game, and these nachos were the highlight of the night, along with the spicy margarita.

The chips were a bit below average – oily and a little too reminiscent of wonton skins for me. The stellar short rib and pickled onions more than made up for them though.

I could have done with a little more cheese and little less sour cream, but that’s personal preference.

4.14/5 pickled jalapeños – eat these celebrating another great Nachojawn Jr season
