More Blue Corn

Not much more to say about Blue Corn that hasn’t been said before, but I’m a sucker for a good tampiqueña.

Carne a la tampiqueña is one of the most popular meat dishes in Mexico. It was created in 1939 by the restaurateur Jose Ines Loredo and his brother chef Fidel, from San Luis Potosí, who moved to the port of Tampico, Tamaulipas. Each ingredient was given a meaning. The oval platter represents the Huasteca; the strip of the roasted meat, the Rio Panuco; the green enchiladas, the huasteco field; the white cheese, the purity of the people living in the Huasteca; the guacamole, the fruits of the region; the black beans, the fertility of the land and the oil boom in the area.

Thanks Wikipedia, and thanks Blue Corn for being delicious!

McGerks – Horsham

It’s been a while since an update from Nacholand, but rest assured there are more nachos, and more content out there. It’s winter, which means that we’re into basketball season. After the season-opening tournament we headed over to McGerks, in Horsham.

Due to some dietary restrictions, these are the chili nachos (no chili)

And since it was a two-weekend tournament, we headed right back over the next weekend.

We ordered the Southwest nachos on our return visit. Little Miss Nachojawn was amazed at the topping distribution.

These are some really good suburban nachos. They get the topping distribution right, do a nice homemade cheese sauce, and make the most of the platter-style serving. Bonus points for the corn as well. Only critique is that I could have done with a little more heat, but that’s a personal preference.

4.35/5 pickled jalapeños – eat these after a 4th grade basketball battle.

Sweet Lucy’s

Nachojawn is also a sucker for some good brisket, and Sweet Lucy’s has served up some of Philly’s best BBQ for years now. I’m pretty sure they catered Little Miss Nachojawn’s first birthday.

Nachojawn Jr. went for his go-to chopped brisket sandwich with some chili and cornbread on the side.

I got the brisket platter with some grits and mac ‘n cheese. Pretty solid meal after another Palumbo Panther win.

Six Feet Under

A new gastropub right off of Washington Square, Six Feet Under was relatively empty when Mrs. Nachojawn and I stopped in for a bite at the bar one Sunday evening.

Little Miss Nachojawn and Nachojawn Jr. were off school for a couple of days, and staying with grandparents, so what better way to take advantage than to eat some bar nachos?

Here are the chicken nachos, with corn salsa, jalapeños, plenty of sour cream, and a homemade cheese sauce, which was delicious, but lukewarm.

Overall these were solid bar nachos, accompanied by some well balanced cocktails. I had the 1829, which was Cazadores blanco, ipa, lime juice, agave nectar, jalapeno, and a splash of orange juice.

Worth a trip if you’re in the area.

3.24/5 pickled jalapeños – make sure to tell them to heat up that queso!

Royal Tavern

Right around the corner from new Nachojawn HQ, Royal Tavern has long had one of the better burgers in town. We finally hit up their nachos one night. How did they stack up?

Spoiler: Not that great. I might have had high hopes, but these just didn’t do it for me. Nothing stood out, my beer wasn’t that cold, and it was a bit of a bummer.

2.35/5 pickled jalapenos – eat these around the corner from Nachojawn HQ.

Mod Pizza

The fast casual pizza has taken off in the last couple of years. Nachojawn’s favorite is Snap, Mrs. Nachojawn likes Blaze, and out in Cherry Hill one day, we decided to hit up Mod.

Here’s the garlic bread with some dipping sauces. I could eat this all day.

Nachojawn standard order is to put a bunch of meat on the pizza, and then spicy stuff. So, you’re probably looking at pepperoni, sausage, jalapenos and other hot peppers. It was good.

Also cool are globes. Nachojawn is a big globe fan.

Taco Loco

There are two Mexican food trucks that regularly hang out on Washington Avenue, east of broad. Taco Loco sets up shop just outside Sacks Playground, around 6th and Washington.

This is a good place to go if you don’t want to talk to the person you’re with – because you won’t be able to hear them over the sound of the generator.

Philly’s beverage tax has hit the taco truck too. I ordered up a couple pastor tacos.

Two greasy thumbs up for these guys. Man, I love Mexican food.

Mexican Mariachi Grill – Ewing, NJ

Following Nachojawn Jr’s soccer tournament, I drove him and his buddy over to the closest Mexican with a decent review. It’s always dicey out in uncharted waters. How did we do?

We pulled into the strip mall, next to a liquor store and a tattoo shop. So far, so good.

Strip mall dining at its finest.

I made good use of that liquor store two doors down. The place offered serve your own chips, along with salsa verde, a mild rojo, and “volcano salsa”. None of them were very hot, but the verde was good.

Nachojawn Jr. went with the steak tacos and gave them a thumbs up. Pretty solid plate of food.

Here are the fish tacos for Junior’s buddy on the Palumbo soccer team.

I ordered a lot of food for myself. I think there’s a chicken tostada under there.

And here’s a pork burrito and hard shell taco.

And of course, the nachos. Weakest part was actually the chips, but I’m a sucker for a well-seasoned ground beef. Everyone ate well after a couple of games at the Yardley Makefield Columbus Day tournament.

3.85/5 pickled jalapenos – eat these in the suburbs after you show those soft kids how South Philly soccer is played.

Taqueria Veracruzana

One of Nachojawn’s dirty secrets is that nachos are not always my go to on a menu. For me, a good mole poblano is the best dish on the menu.

I’m not disclosing nachos, obviously. But there are times and circumstances when I order outside the nacho box.

One occasion was a recent trip to Taqueria Veracruzana, one of the OG’s in Philadelphia’s Mexican food scene.

As promised, I got the enchiladas mole.

They were ok, a clear second place to my favorites at Mole Poblano. The mole here had bitter chocolate notes that were just a bit off putting.

My go to for years here were the al pastor tacos. I’ll have to come back with Nachojawn Jr for his thoughts.
