Buena Onda

Checked out Jose Garces’ new joint up by the Art Museum. Buena Onda is a little confused about whether is’s fast-casual or a little bit more. Dinner for 2 adults and 2 kids clocked in at $60++. Granted the adults did have a margarita each, but that’s still pricey for food that you order at a register and wait for at your table with a number.

But let’s get to the actual goods:

IMG_0842I’m a fan of the “pizza plate” nacho style. Spread out the chips, you’re not getting a lot of wasted chip space. Garces loves his radishes, but the real star of this one are the nopales. Those are what look like green peppers, but are actually part of the cactus. I’m pretty sure that they come from the paddle looking ones.

Anyway, really good nachos. Better than the tacos. $9

Mexico at the Bourse (Mexico & Latin Fare)

Look, this is a nacho blog. At some point I might have to expand to tacos too, but look at the title. NachoJawn. Which is a shame because these nachos are probably the worst looking things that I saw come out of Mexico at the Bourse, an authentic taqueria in the middle of a garbage food court.

IMG_0744I didn’t like the shredded lettuce, the nacho cheez, or the ice cream scoop of sour cream on top. Also, there wasn’t that much of it. You’ve got your standard chopped tomatoes, pickled jalapeños, and that’s about it. The homemade salsas are great, and the other stuff that I saw coming out of the kitchen looked like the real deal. it was tough to not order the tacos al pastor or tamales, but I made a commitment when I picked nachos. For better or worse.

2.3/5 pickled jalapeños – go for the tacos. But go, they looked great in what is the middle of a lunch wasteland.

Nachos – $6.50 (maybe, I didn’t keep a receipt)

Cantina Dos Segundos

Uninspired. Sorry guys. i was really looking forward to these. After like an hour wait on a Saturday, we sat down in a super-dark dining room across from a big bachelorette party.

Cantina Dos SegundosSo, with an audience, I started my evaluation of these nachos. “Roasted” corn, pickled jalapeños, black beans, pico de gallo, melted cheese, and a shitload of crema. The chips, while housemade, must have all been fried up earlier in the day. The nachos were undercooked, cheese undermelted, chips in the middle cold and sad. These were meatless, due to some dietary restrictions in my group (I’m not big into dietary restrictions)

I have fond recollections of the original Cantina’s nachos – but after this experience I’m going to have to go back to see if my memories are fogged by tequila.

2.8/5 pickled jalapeños – ask for them well done maybe?

Draught Horse

Templetown’s first entrant are these bar nachos from the Draught Horse, right around the corner from the Liacouris Center. My son got to rep Taney Basketball on the court pre-game, and then we joined friends for some grub and to watch the Owls take care of business against Houston. First things first, we took care of this business:

Draught HorseLook, these are bar nachos, but better than I was expecting. Chips, pulled chicken pico de gallo, black beans,
cilantro sour cream and “cheddar jack cheese sauce” that I’m pretty sure was your standard nacho cheese. All of it came from a can or a bag, but the chicken was tender, the ratios were good, and I was hungry, so these worked for me.

Iron Hill Brewery – Wilmington

Sometimes the NachoJawn family meets up in Wilimington, as it’s a mid-point between my parents and me. Actually, Elkton, MD is more of a mid-point, but since there’s only a Waffle House there, and I’m usually with NachoJawn Jr., they’ll drive the extra half hour.

So the other weekend we met up at Iron Hill Brewery. Despite their proliferation in the area, this was the first time I checked one out.

IMG_0790These are the house nachos, boasting pico de gallo, black beans, fresh jalapeños, green onion, sour cream, monterey jack and cheddar cheeses. The top plate, as I was warned, was extremely hot. Pretty decent effort by Iron Hill. It’s not tomato season, as evidenced by the pinkish tomato but good effort on the fresh pico de gallo. Similarly, nothing fancy with the cheese blend, but it was melted well.

Café Ynez

I was out by myself one morning and popped into Café Ynez, where I’ve picked up some pretty good rotisserie chicken for dinner on a couple of occasions. A quiet moment to myself isn’t to be wasted, so I immediately ordered these guys:

Breakfast Nachos with chorizo

Breakfast Nachos with chorizo

These are some good nachos. Crack that yolk and let it run all over. The chips are topped with guajillo salsa, refried beans, Oaxaca cheese, pickled jalapeño, sour cream, and of course that beautiful looking egg. Because I like to eat, I asked for some chorizo as well. There was nothing left when I was done.

Lolita

So I had these nachos at a working lunch. Lolita, one of the first restaurants on the 13th street corridor clocks in with this solid entrant into nachodom.

Lolita Chicken Nachos

Lolita Chicken Nachos

These bad boys have got achiote roasted chicken, charred corn, fresno chiles, guacamole, and a queso blend going on. I’m not sure what the need is for places to put radishes on their nachos, but it’s a popular add-on that I could do without.

The flatbread look means that you’re getting a solid chip/topping ratio without the naked limp chips that you sometimes find in the middle of a nacho pile. It’s a good execution, but not the most voluminous plate of nachos you’ll find. Also, spread that avocado out – the soft serve look is a little off-putting.

4.3/5 pickled jalapeños – Eat these at a business lunch with a cucumber jalapeño margarita.

Sidecar Bar & Grille

So these were the second set of nachos that my friend and I had one night, which might account for my lack of enthusiasm about them. The first plate was at Sancho Pistola’s whose review is coming up in a week. These nachos, at Sidecar, advertise melted queso caribe and chihuahua cheese, to go with housemade chorizo, black beans, and a pineapple tomatillo salsa. All sounds great, right?

SidecarI’m not sure what was missing in these nachos. In fact, it’s bothering me so much that I might just go eat them tonight. Huh, maybe that means that I liked them more than I thought I did. This is hurting my brain. I need some nachos.

4.2/5 pickled jalapeños – definitely eat these at happy hour, when they’re $7

Nachos with pork or chorizo – $10 ($7 at happy hour, or I think the pork ones are $7 all day Sunday)

City Tap House

Really good effort behind these nachos – Going local with the Walt Wit white cheddar sauce made with the Philadelphia Brewing Company’s witbier, fresno chiles, and some solid pulled pork.

City Tap House Nachos

City Tap House Nachos

I just can’t get behind that Love Stout BBQ sauce on nachos. BBQ sauce on nachos is maybe even behind BBQ sauce on pizza. I’m sure it has its proponents, but it’s too much sweetness for me. The heat from the chiles wasn’t enough to balance it out. Also, at $15, maybe the most expensive nachos in the city.

Overall, a tasty plate of nachos. 4/5 pickled jalapeños. Eat this while having a bunch of beers.

Wahoo’s Tacos

They can’t all be winners. Canned black beans, shredded cheddar and carne asada. That’s it.

With a couple of ice cream scoops of guacamole and sour cream.

Wahoo's Tacos

Wahoo’s Tacos

Wahoo’s Tacos is a new joint up by Drexel that replaced the never crowded and not very good Mikey’s. They have a great outdoor space to work with, hope they can step up their nacho game for the warmer months. I mean, I’ll eat these, but way too much chip in the chip/fixins equation.

And that industrial margarita mix has to go too.

2.25/5 pickled jalapeños – I’m not sorry I ate them.
